Broich Castle
Broich Castle is the oldest building in town and dates back to 883/884. It is also the oldest and still maintained carolingian fortification north of the Alps. It was erected to protect the town from invasion by the the Normans. However the castle survived with a long and eventful history.
Bloody feuds, wars, occupation and destruction, but also some expansions involved the course of time.
Today an exhibition of the local society for history informs the visitor about these events and its meaning for the city Mülheim an der Ruhr.
The most famous owner of the castle was the grandmother of the later Queen of Prussia Luise, who has been a visitor to Broich twice.
