The alluvial area in Mülheim’s district Saarn is well-known as a local recreation area and very popular with its citizens. The city also established another large area which protects flora and fauna - a paradise for anglers and conservationists. Going by boat, bike or simply strolling along the Ruhr, fields of the alluvial area, especially in full bloom, are a sight for sore eyes.

In this area, visitors also find the popular "Ruhrbeach". Since the 1930s this spot has been used as a recreational facility and sprawls across both sides of the Mendener Bridge. In summer 2000, renovations were finally completed and now it offers leisure services such as:

• a new playground
• a snack-station incl. bike-rental-station
• a landing stage
• a meadow to play football or other ball games
• a barbeque-site (online-reservation necessary)
