Scholl Ferry
"Ferryman take over!" is the yearly call for the Scholl ferry on the Ruhr. On time for the season from April to October the ferry is due on Sundays and holidays for the transfer of bikers and hikers in the the Ruhr Valley. In 2009 the ferry crosses from 11am to 6 pm at "Dicken am Damm".
The transfer is for free, yet donations are welcomed. The company Tengelmann thankfully supports the operation this year again as done before. 8 passengers per crossing are allowed on the ferry, which was built in a project with unemployed youths in 1999.
Historically the ferry goes back to Mr. Herman Scholl, who owed the concession for the ferry-operation up-river at present day "Schloßbrücke". Before the building of the first bridge in 1844, the ferry was the only way to the cross the Ruhr in this area.
